According to the reports, the Red Devils are preparing to make a January move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld. The Sun claims that Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho is confident of landing the Belgian defender to Old Trafford.
Manchester United were looking to sign Alderweireld during last summer transfer window but failed to do so. This time around Mourinho & co are have been given a green signal by the board to sign a world-class centre-back in order to strengthen their defence.
Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly was believed to be Mourinho’s number one target, but his price tag of £90m proved out to be too expensive for the team. Alderweireld is also set to move away from the north London side in search of more game time.
The heart of the matter
Manchester United desperately need to sign a quality centre-back to end their defensive woes. This season they have already conceded 26 goals in only 16 league matches. Last season, they only conceded 28 goals throughout the campaign which resulted in them finishing second. This time around Manchester United’s main aim will be to finish in the top four, so they need a rock-solid defender to take them out of their defensive miseries.
Mourinho is confident that he can get Toby for around £40m as he is out of contract next summer. Alderweireld is not likely to extend his stay at Tottenham and will be looking at other options to get more time on the field. The Belgian International has proven his mettle in the Premier League since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid in 2015. He could also help United in the Champions League knockout stage as per the new UEFA rules.
Toby Alderweireld: The Belgian Beast
When it comes to the last line of defence, Toby Alderweireld is a beast who is quick, strong and reads the game like nobody else. Currently, he is one of the best centre-backs in the league who also plays as a right back if needed.
His experience in the Premier League will surely help United’s defence. The Belgian could form a dominating partnership with Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailey, and provide Mourinho with more options. The 29-year-old was targeted by The Red Devils in the summer transfer window, but the deal collapsed.
Toby had an amazing World Cup campaign, with the Belgian national team finishing third. Approaching the end of his tenure at Tottenham, the Belgian defender is unlikely to renew his contract, as he is looking for a new challenge.
Spurs would be looking to cash in on the player during the January window, rather than letting him join another team for free in the summer.
For now, this should be seen as a developing story. However, considering the Belgian’s impressive skills, Manchester United will be really eager to sign him. It remains to be seen how Tottenham react to this development.
