Chennaiyin FC have had a nightmare season as they have defended their title in the worst possible manner. Placed ninth on the table with a mere five points to show for their efforts, the reigning champions have been a shadow of their former self. Not only have they struggled for goals this season, they have the joint worst defensive record with 21 goals leaked in.

Carlos Salom and Jeje Lalpekhlua, the star players up front who were expected to shoulder the responsibility of scoring goals, have not fired with just a single goal between them. In fact, their leading goal scorer is a certain Thoi Singh, who struggled for minutes last season. Although he has four goals to his name, the winger too has been wasteful in front of goal.

Coach John Gregory has been at a loss for words to describe what has transpired this season as they have struggled despite retaining the core of their championship winning side. Raphael Augusto has done well to keep the ball however, the Brazilian too has been guilty of trying to overdo things.

Delhi Dynamos are the only team left in the entire competition who are yet to win a single game this season. They are placed at the last position in the league table and it is shocking to witness this club still struggle. So many changes were made to the squad as well as management, yet the result haven’t seen any difference. This would be demoralising for the players as whatever they’ve tried this year, has resulted in absolutely nothing.

Similarly, Chennaiyin FC are officially the worst defender of the ISL trophy in the history of the competition. With only one win this season, they are in the second last place of the league table. The team has no chance of making to the semi-finals now, and it has been a harsh reality check for the club after the highest of highs last year.

Players to look watch for

  • Thoi Singh

The Chennaiyin FC forward has been the most consistent player for the team this season. He is yet to do anything wrong for the team and has already scored four goals this season.

  • Lallianzuala Chhangte

The Indian winger is proving why he could be a future superstar for the country. The team is overdependent on him and he is not letting this fact deter him from being great.
